Side-dressing Prayer

Our yellow squash, zucchini, and cucumbers have been yielding heavily for a few weeks, so its time to side-dress  them with a healthy dose of compost. They’ve been working hard, we expect them to continue to so do, so we must give them what they need to keep going. Plants, like cars, can only go so far on fumes.

That’s also true of those who seek to serve God. We can only go so far without a refill, no matter how deeply we’re rooted in Him.

One of the best ways to do that is through prayer, and Jesus gave us a great example. He repeatedly retreated to prayer after periods of hard work.  See e.g Matthew 14:23; Mark 1:35; Luke 5:15-16. We will bear much more fruit if we follow His pattern.
